2021 Shriners Children’s Open: Top 10 power rankings at TPC Summerlin
Will Zalatoris picked up right where he left off last season.
The 25-year-old was in the mix at the Fortinet Championship for T-11th place and again last week for T-14th at the Sanderson Farms Championship.
Zalatoris’s weakness last year was on the greens. He spoke at the Sanderson about the work he’s putting in with his coach.
“So I got to give a lot of credit to Josh Gregory, he and I spent a lot of time together over the last four, five weeks and really just kind of really just kind of honed in our practice routine, we added in a few new things,” Zalatoris was transcribed by ASAP Sports. “I’ve been a great lag putter, but at the same time I left a lot of 20-footers short last year. So we fixed that.”
Through two events in the 2021-22 campaign, Zalatoris is 66th in strokes gained putting (.286). It’s not world beating, but considering all the success he had last year while ranking 122nd (-.66), that might be all it takes to reach another level.
His ball striking is already at an elite level as evidenced by ranking ninth in SG tee to green (1.184) and seventh in SG approach (.751).
Zalatoris will be starting to see courses for the second time. That includes TPC Summerlin.
The Big Z debuted at the 2020 Shriners Children’s Open by taking T-5th (68-64-64-69) and finishing just three shots off the lead.
Zalatoris was seventh in the field in SG tee to green (8.57 total) and had the second longest drive of the week at 394 yards. He was also seventh in scrambling and got up and down every time through the first two rounds.
