Like a lot of his American teammates in the field this week, Tony Finau is making his first post-Ryder Cup appearance. He only went 1-2-0, but he and Harris English dominated in Friday best ball. The duo lost only 1UP on Saturday and Finau’s singles loss was inconsequential given team U.S.A.’s big lead by Sunday.

Finau played great golf late in the summer to grab one of the captain’s picks from Steve Stricker. He won his second career PGA Tour event and first in five years at The Northern Trust. The Utahan followed it up with a T-15th at the BMW Championship to comfortably make the Tour Championship and finish 11th in the FedEx Cup.

Desert golf seems to suit Finau well. He owns a solo second place finish at the 2020 Waste Management Phoenix Open and T-2nd at the 2021 Saudi International on the European Tour.

The 32-year-old gained strokes in all statistical categories last season. Finau’s known for his power and ranked 36th on the PGA Tour in SG off the tee (.281), but his strength was around the green where he was 20th (.298).

Additionally, he was 23rd in birdie average (4.16) and rarely has a blow up round to come in at 14th in scoring average (69.972).

Between approach ranges of 125-150, 150-175 and 175-200 he’s top-25 in proximity.

With plenty of rest since Whistling Straits and the pressure off of trying to win for the first time in years, I expect Finau to get off to a great start to 2021-22.
