Patrick Reed is back on the horse this fall after bilateral pneumonia and ankle issues sidelined him late this summer and played a part in his absence from his beloved battlefield, the Ryder Cup.

He looked a little shaky in his first few starts back, but a weak field and some more rest in recent weeks still leads me to give Reed a nod in the top 10.

Reed admirably fired the T-17th best gross score at the Tour Championship to finish 25th in the FedEx Cup. After four weeks off, the 31-year-old missed the cut.

He found something with a Friday 66 at the no-cut CJ Cup but it didn’t sustain over 72 holes en route to T-68th.

With a couple more weeks to rest up, I expect him to turn the corner soon.

Reed is making his Butterfield Bermuda Championship debut.

He appears to have a good skill set to maneuver around Port Royal. Reed was seventh last season on the PGA Tour in strokes gained around the green (.368) and fourth in SG putting (.669).

He’s long enough to compete on any course, but a sub-7,000 yard layout doesn’t hurt.

Whether on approach or close to the green, Reed seems to have a shot for every scenario escaping trouble. That will be a factor when the Atlantic winds blow this week.

I don’t blame you if you want to wait to see Reed back on the upswing before taking a chance on him. With that said, you’re never going to see him compete against a weaker field all season than this one.

Prior to his health concerns, he had a solid 2020-21 season going with seven top-10s, including a win at the 2021 Farmers Insurance Open.
