After graduating through Korn Ferry Tour finals this fall, one of the Bermuda Championship’s handful of top-100 players in the world rankings has had a rude awakening on the PGA Tour.

The talented young Australian, Lucas Herbert, missed the cut in his first two starts of the 2021-22 season, the Fortinet Championship and Sanderson Farms Championship. The rookie was two and four shots, respectively from making the weekend.

Not great, but at least he’s not out there throwing up 80s.

One would believe once he gets settled in playing full-time in the U.S. that Herbert’s potential will start to shine.

He was a menace on the European Tour this summer, winning a Rolex Series event in the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open and following it up with a T-4 the next week at the abrdn Scottish Open, another Rolex event.

The 25-year-old also picked up top-20s on the PGA Tour at the Memorial Tournament and Travelers Championship.

Herbert can hit the ball a mile, sitting 14th on the European Tour in driving distance (311.73). That isn’t a huge advantage, relatively, at Port Royal, but it can help when winds are high and fan’s blowing your way. He was also first on the Euro Tour in putts per green in regulation at 1.7.

Perhaps getting his PGA Tour competitors out of their comfort zone outside the U.S.A. will be just what the doctor ordered for Herbert to get it going again.

Prior to his two missed cuts in a row this fall, Herbert had just two since May.

He’s set to make his Butterfield Bermuda Championship debut.
