2021 Bermuda Championship: Top 10 power rankings at Port Royal GC
Sahith Theegala nearly won in the second event of his rookie season.
The former top-ranked amateur at Pepperdine owned the 18- and 54-hole lead by one shot at the Sanderson Farms Championship. He couldn’t follow rounds of 64-67-67 with another sub-70 score, but he still held on for his first career top-10 on the PGA Tour.
It was Theegala’s first time in the gauntlet like that. Moments like those are huge for a young player.
“I played some really good golf and just a little unfortunate how that sort of that back nine is, but it’s my first one and first time really being in that position,” Theegala was transcribed by ASAP Sports, “so I’m obviously going to learn a lot and just take so many positives away.”
It appears like there’s more good results where that came from.
The 23-year-old Californian was a three-time all-American in college and was just the fifth person ever to win the Haskins Award, Ben Hogan Award and Jack Nicklaus Award in the same year.
After missing the cut in the first of three Korn Ferry Tour finals events this year, Theegala came up clutch to post T-4th at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship and sixth at the Korn Ferry Tour Championship to earn his PGA Tour card.
His final college season was cut short due to COVID-19 and his early pro career has been made difficult by circumstances surrounding the pandemic.
Through it all, he reached his goal of getting to the PGA Tour and finally has stability in his schedule.
This will be Theegala’s Butterfield Bermuda Championship debut.
