Abraham Ancer hasn’t quite won in his home country’s event, but he’s fared pretty well for himself.

Mexico’s top golfer missed the cut in his World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba debut in 2015 but has cashed in every year since.

That includes T-9th (71-69-65-68) in 2017, T-21st (65-68-67-71) in 2018, T-8th (66-72-65-67) in 2019 and T-12th (72-67-65-66) last year.

“I feel like I really like this place,” Ancer was transcribed by Tee Scripts in 2019. “This is my fourth or fifth time playing it, a golf course that I love. Obviously I want to perform in front of my people, but I truly, this is just exciting more than just nerves.”

Playing from the fairway is crucial at El Camaleon. Ancer is a fairway finder at 71.05%, good for fifth last season on the PGA Tour.

He also hits a ton of greens and was 23rd in 2020-21 in strokes gained approach (.499).

Not to mention, he was 20th in the field in SG putting at the PGA Championship on paspalum greens.

The common thread is one round in the 70s each year seems to be keeping him out of the winner’s circle at the Worldwide Technology Championship.

Fortunately for Ancer, he’s playing some of the best golf of his career as of late. That starts with winning for the first time on the PGA Tour.

The former Oklahoma Sooner won this summer at the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational to get the monkey off his back after five runner-up finishes.

The 30-year-old continued his good form with a pair of top-10s in the FedEx Cup Playoffs and T-14th his last time out a few weeks ago at the CJ Cup.

With some time to rest, I expect Ancer to feast on a field that will have a lot of players battered from the Bermuda winds last week.
