Matt Fitzpatrick arrives at the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba for the first time.

The Englishman’s hopeful his recent form will carry him. Fitzpatrick won at historic Valderrama a few weeks ago to take the Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucia Masters on the European Tour.

While that win came against a relatively weak field, Fitzpatrick did beat Jon Rahm in his home country and overcame a tight, tree-lined venue that will make El Camaleon look expansive.

Fitzpatrick followed it up with T-30th last week at the Butterfield Championship, another tournament where he was a newcomer.

Playing in windy conditions last week and cramped conditions in Spain should have Fitz well-weathered to handle more benign weather here in Mexico.

The 27-year-old ranked 15th on the PGA Tour last season in strokes gained off the tee (.539). That was mainly due to his accuracy, which had him 17th in fairway percentage (68.37). Fitzpatrick is a shorter hitter who will benefit from playing a sub-7,000 yard venue.

The putter has been hot and cold through his career, but it’s been more of a weapon in recent years. Fitzpatrick was second on the PGA Tour in SG putting in 2019-20 and 38th in 2020-21. He also was 34th in the field at the 2021 PGA Championship rolling it on paspalum greens.

He racked up 12 top-25s worldwide in 2021 and qualified for the European Ryder Cup team. It’s been a successful campaign for Fitz.

“I felt like I played really well obviously at Valderrama and I played really well at the Ryder Cup as well. Obviously nothing to show for it unfortunately, but like you say, I felt like my game is trending in the right direction,” Fitzpatrick was transcribed by Tee Scripts. “I was happy with where I was at.”
