Patrick Reed did a lot to answer concerns about his health with his play at last week’s Butterfield Bermuda Championship. Granted, he was competing against one of the weakest fields ever assembled on the PGA Tour, but Reed still went out and fired red numbers to nearly win.

After opening with scores of 68-69-68, he trailed the 54-hole lead by five shots. A front-nine 2-under 34 to open Sunday didn’t make it look like he was due to contend for the title.

Then a slew of four birdies in the last five holes suddenly vaulted Reed up to a scary clubhouse lead at 14-under. He waited around for over an hour until Lucas Herbert was the only one to steer it in better, reaching 15-under.

Reed was still inspired by the performance after missing the cut and finishing T-68th at a no-cut event in his first two events of the season coming off ankle issues and bilateral pneumonia late this summer.

“I think it gives me a lot of confidence,” Reed was transcribed by Tee Scripts. “Ever since I got back from being sick, it just seemed like the offense wasn’t quite there. I wasn’t making enough birdies and when that happens, one loose swing here or there, it turns around, try to salvage a mediocre round. This week I definitely produced enough offense, but I need to take away some of the careless errors.”

The 31-year-old was fifth in the field in Bermuda in putts per green in regulation (1.608) and 14th in GIR (70.83%).

Reed arrives to the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba for the second time. He missed the cut at El Camaleon in 2017, but only by a shot after respectable scores of 72-70.

The Texan is a recovery and scrambling wizard. He ranked seventh last season on the PGA Tour in strokes gained around the green (.368) and fourth in SG putting (.669).

Reed was 24th in SG putting at the 2021 PGA Championship on paspalum greens like at El Camaleon.
