2021 World Wild Technology Championship at Mayakoba: Top 10 power rankings
Justin Thomas went six years between starts at the Worldwide Technology Championship from 2014 to 2020. Could it now be a regular stop on his schedule?
Based on his first two appearances at El Camaleon, there are certainly worse venues he could frequent.
A T-23rd in his debut and T-12th last year are solid results to build from, even if they pale by the 14-time PGA Tour winner’s lofty standards.
JT was in contention last year but couldn’t quite summon a round in the mid-60s on Sunday to truly chase. His Saturday 62 was one off the course record set by Roland Thatcher in 2008.
“I had to remind myself I’m at a golf tournament, I’m not on vacation,” Thomas was transcribed by Tee Scripts in 2020. “It’s so beautiful here. The beach, the golf course is pretty, so many holes on the water. It’s a great, great relaxing venue and a nice way to end the PGA TOUR year before we start off in Kapalua”.
Thomas comes to Mexico on a streak of six made cuts since May, which is impressive while also showing how many no-cut events there are these days.
He’s finished top-30 six straight times also, cut or not. That includes T-4th at The Northern Trust and T-2nd at the Tour Championship. Thomas was tops in the FedEx Cup entering the playoffs and nearly won his second season-long title.
His last start was T-18th a couple weeks ago at the CJ Cup.
The former Alabama Crimson Tide ranked third last season in strokes gained approach (.887) for his fifth straight season inside the top six. Until Collin Morikawa came around, JT was the game’s foremost iron player.
