Billy Horschel is trending in the right direction at the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba. His 2016 debut at El Camaleon didn’t go so hot with a missed cut, but he regrouped in 2019. Horschel posted 65-71-66-68 to snag T-8th.

The former Florida Gator improved by two shots and three spots on the leaderboard to T-5th (70-69-65-64) in 2020. Horschel hit 75% greens in regulation (T-14th), scrambled at a 72.22% clip (18th) and made no double bogeys or worse.

He’s also played well in recent weeks leading in. Horschel won the European Tour’s flagship event, the BMW PGA Championship, in September. He was one of the top players to miss out on a captain’s pick for the American Ryder Cup team as he was coming off a top-10 result in the FedEx Cup Playoffs, too.

The 34-year-old ranked 35th on the PGA Tour last season in strokes gained off the tee (.289) and was 42nd in driving accuracy (65.7%).

Horschel finished T-23rd at the 2021 PGA Championship, one of the few venues with paspalum greens like this week.

He’s only missed one cut worldwide since February, and that was at the U.S. Open. Horschel hasn’t MC’d at a standard PGA Tour event (non-major, WGC, elevated status) since January.

Horschel is a bit of a grinder. While a lot of guys may use this week as a vacation, I see him being hungry for his second PGA Tour victory of 2021 (WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play) and first individual stroke play victory on this tour since 2017 (AT&T Byron Nelson).
