Scottie Scheffler’s time will come someday, right?

He’s done all you can do in the game of golf short of winning a PGA Tour event. It’s hard to get on his back too much; he is still 25, you know.

Nevertheless, it was another close call last week as he posted T-2nd in his home state at the Houston Open. It was his best stroke play finish on the PGA Tour, but with a 54-hole lead that was still intact for a time on the back nine, there was still some disappointment.

Scheffler was third on the week at Memorial Park in strokes gained around the green (3.889) and second in SG off the tee (3.912)

His driving won’t be as big of an asset at Sea Island, but the rest of his Ryder Cup-worthy array of talents will be.

The former Texas Longhorn is making his second RSM Classic appearance. Scheffler finished T-5th (70-66-63-68) in 2019. He did a little of everything well at Sea Island, ranking top 25 in SG  putting, tee to green and approach.

Prior to Houston, Scheffler contended at the Mayakoba where he took solo fourth. Four of his last six starts were top-25s.

Putting and bunker play are a couple areas he could afford to improve if he wants to turn all these top-10s into wins. His stats in Houston were reasonable as he was 39th in SG putting (.033) and got up and down two out of four times out of the sand, which is fine in a small sample size splashing out onto those Tom Doak greens.

Sea Island has a little less bite and a Texan like him should know how to handle Sea Island’s main defense, the high winds that are forecasted

“I feel like the stuff I’m working on, I’m really improving,” Scheffler was transcribed by Tee Scripts. “I feel like my bunker game’s getting a lot better, I feel like my putting’s improving a lot and the things that I’m working on I’m starting to see some success with, which is exciting for me.”
