Winning the Hero World Challenge won’t count as an official PGA Tour win for Scottie Scheffler, but beating 19 world class players could be the boost he needs to get it done in 2022.

The talented Texan notably made, and contributed to, the 2021 American Ryder Cup team without a PGA Tour win on the resume. He’s had some close calls in the past few years, including here in the fall.

The 25-year-old was right there recently at the World Wide Technology Championship where he finished fourth and the Houston Open where he took T-2nd.

Scheffler collected nine top-10s in 2021, including solo second at the WGC-Dell Match Play and three at the majors.

This will be his debut at the Hero World Challenge.

Scheffler is one of the longer hitters in the field, ranking 36th last season on the PGA Tour in driving distance (305). He was 17th in strokes gained off the tee (.515).

If the wind is up, everybody will miss some greens. Scheffler was 28th in SG around the green (.249).

He was also seventh in birdie average (4.39).

Scheffler could be less rusty than most of the field that’s been off for a month or more. He last teed it up a couple weeks ago at the RSM Classic. He finished T-57th to compile his ninth made cut worldwide in his last 10 starts.

That was Scheffler’s first event with new caddie, Ted Scott, on the bag. Scott was with Bubba Watson for 15 years until the two parted ways in September.
