2022 Sentry Tournament of Champions: Top 10 power rankings at Kapalua
The current PGA Tour season got underway in the fall, but this week’s Sentry Tournament of Champions still feels like season’s beginning.
It’s been over a month without a FedEx Cup points event, meaning everyone in the field is rested and ready for 2022.
There are 39 players in the field, all of who won PGA Tour event in 2021.
The Plantation course at Kapalua in Maui, Hawaii, has been the tournament host since 1999.
It’s the lone par-73 on the PGA Tour schedule and perhaps the hilliest. You’ll never confuse the picturesque views of the Pacific Ocean with the azaleas and pines of Augusta National, but the two are comparable in the amount of elevation change and sidehill lies that come into play.
Both also feature wide fairways and playable second and third cuts.
Course upgrades were made in 2020 to implement Celebration Bermuda on tees and fairways and TifEagle Bermuda on the greens. Bunkers were also reworked.
Twenty-eight of the top 50 players in the Official World Golf Rankings are competing for an $8.2 million purse.
There is no 36-hole cut and all players are guaranteed a payday. Rory McIlroy is the only eligible player not competing.
The winning score in the last five Tournament of Champions was 20-under or better, as well as 10 of the last 12. In 2019, Justin Thomas prevailed at 14-under, the worst winning score since Vijay Singh in 2007 (-14).
It’s often rainy in Maui, and that will be the case during the practice rounds and perhaps into Thursday. It should dry off for the final few rounds with temperatures in the 60s-70s and light to medium wind.
Let’s get down to it. Here are the top 10 players to vie for the title and quickly lock up a spot in the 2023 Tournament of Champions.
