2022 Sentry Tournament of Champions: Top 10 power rankings at Kapalua
It’s hard to envision Jon Rahm failing to qualify for this event anytime soon. The Spaniard’s reached the Tournament of Champions every year starting in 2018. He made a splash as a debutant, finishing solo second (71-70-66-69). While he couldn’t punch his ticket back to Hawaii right then and there, he assured his return just two weeks later with a win at the CareerBuilder Challenge.
Rahm’s next three Tournament of Champions appearances ended in T-8th (70-71-69-69), T-9th (67-68-68-70) and T-7th (70-66-69-67)
He reacted positively to Kapalua’s new greens in 2020.
“It’s great to be back here in Maui and to see the greens being as good as they are,” Rahm was transcribed last year by ASAP Sports. “I feel like this place has been good to me in the past, and right now the greens are firming up beautifully, so it’s a lot of fun.”
Rahm had a splendid 2021 and, in my opinion, was robbed of PGA Tour Player of the Year Honors.
The year most notably included his U.S. Open win for his first major.
It’s hard to believe that ended up being his only win, though one looked inevitable prior to his COVID diagnosis at the Memorial Tournament. He missed just three cuts worldwide all year, two of which came late in the year when he was running on fumes.
He had 13 top-10s in 21 events.
Rahm ranked second on the PGA Tour last season in strokes gained off the tee (.834) and eighth in SG approach (.717). His all-around game appears very sustainable, as we saw with a putter that helped guide him home at Torrey Pines and that ranked 42nd in SG (.331).
Barring high winds, scores tend to be low at Kapalua. Rahm was first in birdie average (4.51) and scoring average (69.3).
