2022 Sentry Tournament of Champions: Top 10 power rankings at Kapalua
A notoriously windy track like Kapalua with a boatload of uneven lies can throw a wrench in Bryson DeChambeau’s usual strategy. He’s used to relatively flat, benign bomb-and-gouge courses that predominate the PGA Tour.
The Sentry Tournament of Champions annually provides low scores, but there are still variables to conquer. The wide fairways are nice, but they don’t often lend a lot of room lengthwise to let loose off the tee.
DeChambeau led the field in driving distance last year, albeit at a modest 303.6 yards.
His tournament debut did not go well in 2018 when he took 26th place. DeChambeau was at or below par all four rounds but did not break 70. Recalibrations were made to improve to T-7th (69-68-70-71) in 2019 and again in T-7th in 2021 (69-67-70-66).
He was also second in scrambling (88.24%) and first in strokes gained off the tee (6.521 total).
DeChambeau had a poor putting week, which was surprising for an underrated putter like he is.
The former SMU Mustang ranked 20th on the PGA Tour last season in SG putting (.456). He was also first in SG off the tee (1.162), first in holes per eagle (75.8), first in par breakers (26.32%), first in par-5 scoring average (4.45) and had the lowest round on the PGA Tour last season (60, BMW Championship)
DeChambeau had a decent 2021 by his standards, but it paled to his 2020 where one of two wins was a major and he churned out 11 top-10s in just 19 events.
As always, it’ll be an interesting ride tracking what’s next in the winding world of B.A.D.
