No one played better golf to close out 2021 than Viktor Hovland. Will he able to keep up the momentum at Kapalua a month after his last start?

The Norwegian fired 67-65-62-67 to run away for a four-shot victory in a title defense of the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba. A few weeks later, Hovland beat a bunch of the guys he’ll see this week when scores of 68-69-67-66 netted him a one-shot win at the Hero World Challenge.

Hovland’s on a streak of nine straight rounds in the 60s and has been sub-70 in 12 of his last 13.

The former Oklahoma State Cowboy is making his second appearance at the Sentry Tournament of Champions. His debut resulted in T-31st in 2021.

Kapalua’s Plantation course can be a tough nut to crack for newcomers. Hovland handled the challenge with aplomb for three rounds, opening in 69-68-68. He was likely too far out to contend for the title, but a closing 76 dropped him out of the top 10.

Hovland still made no double bogeys or worse that week and ranked fifth in total strokes gained off the tee (2.879).

Hovland was remarkably consistent in 2021. He missed just one cut at the Players Championship and withdrew once at the PGA Championship. Hovland won the DP World Tour’s BMW International Open and added a T-2nd at the WGC-Workday Championship at Concession as part of 10 top-10s worldwide.

The 24-year-old ranked fifth on the PGA Tour in SG off the tee (.656). Hovland was also sixth in birdie average (4.4), third in approaches from 175-200 yards (29’1”) and first in approaches from 200-225 yards (33’).
