Justin Thomas is a two-time winner at the Sentry Tournament of Champions in six appearances. Not to go all analytics nerd on you, but a .333 win rate in a PGA Tour event is pretty good.

Thomas picked up his first trophy on the island in 2017 when he posted 67-67-67-69 to win by three over Hideki Matsuyama. He was solid all around that week and finished second in the field in greens in regulation (87.5%).

In 2020, JT carded 67-73-69-69 to win in blustery conditions. He beat Patrick Reed and another Kapalua conqueror, Xander Schauffele, in a playoff.

Thomas was second in the field in strokes gained putting (10.044 total) and second in SG approach (5.729).

The uneven lies and windy conditions common at this event can be a nuisance, but Thomas still acknowledges and relishes the fact that aggression is still needed to finish high on the leaderboard.

“I think the fairways are big enough and the greens are kind of bowl-like enough to where you can still get it close to the hole even when it is blowing pretty hard,” Thomas was transcribed by ASAP Sports in 2021. “So you really just have to go out and execute.”

The former Alabama Crimson Tide executed quite well to close out 2021. He’s made seven straight cuts worldwide since May and finished top-30 in his last eight events.

Thomas finished the 2020-21 PGA Tour season ranked third in SG approach (.887) and third in SG tee to green (1.418). He was also ninth in birdie average at 4.31 per round, which is the minimum he’ll need to win at a low-scoring event like the Tournament of Champions tends to produce.
