2022 Sony Open: Top 10 power rankings at Waialae
Seamus Power’s resume at the Sony Open isn’t sparkling, but his strong play in 2021 continuing into 2022 is enough to think his fortunes at Waialae could turn.
The Irishman earned his first career PGA Tour win last year when he defeated J.T. Poston in a playoff at the Barbasol Championship. That was one of six top-10s in just 22 starts.
He missed his first three cuts of 2021, as well as four of his first five before going on an absolutely blistering pace. Power at one point reeled off six straight top-20s that culminated at the Barbasol.
It was one of the more underrated golf stories of the year seeing the 34-year-old journeyman find his stride.
Power finished fifth last season on the PGA Tour in strokes gained around the green (.44) and was 25th in SG tee to green (.845). Short irons are the norm hitting into greens at Waialae. Power was 18th in proximity from 125-150 yards (20’11”).
He was also eighth in putting from inside 10 feet (89.7%) and fourth from 10-15 feet (37.96%).
Power’s already up to five top-25s in the 2021-22 season highlighted by T-4th at the RSM Classic.
Last week, the former East Tennessee State Buccaneer carded 71-65-69-67 to finish T-15th at his Sentry Tournament of Champions debut. Power was solid all-around at Kapalua, ranking top-25 in just about every stat.
Power’s making his fifth Sony Open start. He made the cut in his first two appearances in 2017 and 2018.
