Corey Conners picked up where he left off in 2021 by posting another solid result in his 2022 debut. The Canadian relished the Hawaiian sun, carding 64-67-69-64 (-16) for 11th place at last week’s Sony Open. It was Conners’ sixth straight made cut and fifth top-25 in his last six starts.

“I had a lot of confidence in my game for a long time now,” Conners was transcribed by ASAP Sports. “Be nice to string four good rounds together. Kind of struggled a bit yesterday. But take a lot of positives. Worked on my game quite a bit in the off-season. New dad, so being a father has been pretty amazing. Good to get out and play well early, and hopefully can keep the momentum going the next few weeks.”

The 30-year-old unfortunately three-putted the 72nd hole at Waialae to miss out on a top-10, but the flat stick was still rolling at a nice rate for his standards.

Conners was 33rd in the field in strokes gained putting (.879 total).

He was 112th (-.008 per round) in that stat on the PGA Tour last season, so any week he’s gaining strokes on the greens is a good thing. Conners is an elite ball striker who finished 12th in SG tee to green (1.15) last season and was top-10 off the tee and on approach. The former Kent State Golden Flash is making his third The American Express appearance. Conners earned T-50th in 2018 and missed the cut in 2019.

It’s more than reasonable to expect bigger things at this event in 2022 given his career trajectory since the last time he arrived to PGA West. Conners won a few months after his MC in 2019 at the Valero Texas Open.

It remains his only win in the big leagues, though more seem likely in the future. Conners piled up more top-10s (5) than missed cuts (3) last year on the way to make it to East Lake. He’s all but a lock for this year’s International Presidents Cup team.
