Is Jon Rahm’s dominance over the rest of the Tour increasing?

Jon Rahm is the World Number One and he is making the case that he is the most dominant player in the sport at the moment.

The Spaniard shows no signs of relenting either after he carried his dominant form from 2021 into his first event of the new calendar year at the Sentry Tournament Of Champions on the Hawaiian Islands. It took a historical and very special performance from Australian Cameron Smith to deny Rahm another win, and it’s beginning to look like there may not be much competition standing between himself and victory every time he appears at an event.

Will 2021 prove to be just the starting point for the Jon Rahm era? he certainly hopes so and he clearly has no plans of letting his foot off the pedal anytime soon when he stated:

"After last season’s success, my goal is to beat it. My goal is always to do better each year. It’s hard to say because I’ve had such a consistent year (15 top-10s) and had one win, but I can tell you right now I would gladly take a bit more inconsistency and have more than one win."

That is pretty scary to think about when you consider just how good he was in 2021. Rahm finished the 2021 portion of his PGA schedule with seven top 10 finishes in eight starts, throw in the fact that he would have won the Memorial tournament last year before having to withdraw and he would have closed 2021 with eight straight top 10 finishes, let that sink in for a moment. Of those seven top 10’s, four were top 5’s (not including the Memorial), and two of those were outright wins.

Jon Rahm followed up his U.S. Open success by nearly running down Morikawa and company on Sunday at The Open Championship in his very next major start. The Spaniard also led the PGA Tour in total strokes gained in 2021 and he began this year gaining nearly 3.5 total strokes at the Sentry Tournament Of Champions.

The World Number One will be out to prove this year that 2021 was just a stepping stone on the path to how good he can actually be, the truth of the matter is that he will be extremely tough to beat in any tournament that he tee’s it up in this year.
