Hideki Matsuyama won the Sony Open for the first time in his career a couple of weeks ago. Can he keep it rolling to win his first Farmers Insurance Open?

I don’t see why not.

He’s made his last six cuts at Torrey Pines and seven of nine total. Matsuyama contended in 2019 with a T-3rd (66-66-73-67) finish to highlight three top-20s total.

In 2021, the Japanese star finished T-53rd (73-67-74-71) at the Farmers and T-26th (69-76-74-68) at the U.S. Open.

Matsuyama comes to southern California off of a week of rest after the Sony win. It was his second win of the PGA Tour season along with his triumph at the 2021 Zozo Championship.

With 20 rounds measured for PGA Tour stats this season, Matsuyama’s got a modest sample size to work with. He ranks seventh in strokes gained tee to green (1.251) and 21st in SG approach (.683). The FedEx Cup leader is also 15th in greens in regulation (75.93%).

Matsuyama hit perhaps the shot of the year thus far to win the Sony Open. In the first and only playoff hole against Russell Henley, Matsuyama hit his second shot on the par-5 18th to three feet from 277 yards. The towering fairway shot showed the type of ball striking that allowed him to earn career win No. 7.

A good sign for the 29-year-old was he was first in SG putting (7.264) at the Sony. It’s a whole other ballgame rolling it well on poa annua greens this week at Torrey Pines. Nonetheless, a little confidence with the flat stick is huge for a traditionally poor putter.
