2022 Farmers Insurance Open: Top 10 power rankings at Torrey Pines
The last time we saw Jon Rahm at Torrey Pines, he was holing putts down the stretch to clinch his first major championship at the 2021 U.S. Open at the South course.
The Spaniard posted 69-70-72-67 and erased a three-shot deficit entering the day to win by one over perpetual runner-up, Louis Oosthuizen. Rahm was bogey-free over his last 14 holes Sunday and birdied 17 and 18 to complete the comeback.
It was a full-circle moment for a guy who won his first PGA Tour event at the same venue at the 2017 Farmers Insurance Open
“Not that I was really thinking about it on 17, but last time I won here, I finished birdie-eagle, and I knew I could finish strong again,” Rahm was transcribed by ASAP Sports referencing his 60-foot eagle putt. “I knew history could get close to repeating itself. I was aware hitting that putt. I stayed patient all day. I hadn’t made many long putts all week. I made one on Thursday on 14, but that’s the kind of putts I like. I’ve made a couple of long left-to-righters in the past in some clutch moments, and I was able to get two more on the last two holes.”
At the Farmers, Rahm also finished T-29th (68-66-75-77) in 2018, T-5th (62-72-68-72) in 2019, second (68-71-65-70) in 2020 and T-7th (69-67-72-72) in 2021. It’s hard to beat that resume.
Torrey Pines is a long, relatively straightforward test that precisely favors a guy like Rahm.
At the 2021 Farmers, Rahm made no double bogeys or worse. He hit only 50 percent fairways but was 13th in strokes gained off the tee (.569) and wasn’t missing fairways by much.
The 27-year-old is coming off a T-14th (66-70-67-71) finish last week at The American Express after taking second two weeks prior at the Sentry Tournament of Champions.
Rahm wasn’t too pleased with the setup last week in Palm Springs, so perhaps getting back to familiar climes at Torrey Pines will get him back on track.
