Last week withstanding, Talor Gooch is playing some of the best golf of his life.

He missed the cut at The American Express, snapping a streak of seven paychecks in a row going back to August.

Since August, Gooch earned his first career PGA Tour victory at the RSM Classic and piled up four more top-11s.

In 2022, he debuted at the Sentry Tournament of Champions with a respectable T-15th finish. He extended his stay with a T-27th at the Sony Open.

Perhaps an early exit the next week in Palm Springs will get Gooch refocused for an event he’s played well at before.

The former Oklahoma State Cowboy is 4-for-4 making the cut at the Farmers Insurance Open. Gooch contended in 2019 when he recorded his best PGA Tour finish to date, T-3rd (69-68-67-68). He was one of just two players to be in the 60s all four days and ranked first in putts per green in regulation (1.585).

Gooch’s Farmers Insurance Open resume also lists a T-51st (71-68-70-80) in 2018, T-36th (71-72-72-69) in 2020, and T-48th (66-74-77-71) in 2021.

The 30-year-old ranks ninth on the PGA Tour this season in SG approach (.814), 28th in SG around the green (.427) and seventh in scoring average (69.704).

As long as he can hit it straight enough off the tee this week, Gooch’s iron play is a strength that can carry him to contention here.

The next step for him is to get it done against a field filled with big names.

This could be the time at one of golf’s more historic venues.
