2022 Farmers Insurance Open: Top 10 power rankings at Torrey Pines
Bryson DeChambeau’s waiting a little longer to head out to the Middle East this year, so he’s left time for the Farmers Insurance Open for the first time since 2018.
He missed the cut at this event in 2017 and 2018 but bounced back to make the cut at Torrey Pines South at the 2021 U.S. Open en route to T-26th (73-69-68-77).
It looked like it may have been Bryson’s U.S. Open to win when he briefly led on the back nine. Then he briefly bled. A closing 44 dropped him down the leaderboard.
If DeChambeau can get those bad memories out of his head, there’s no reason he can’t play well at Torrey. He was T-4th in the field in greens in regulation (68%), 10th in strokes gained off the tee (3.58 total), and T-8th in SG approach (5.22) while finishing second in driving distance (334).
“If I have over 190 mile-an-hour ball speed, it’s going to be tremendous out here covering bunkers and whatnot. But again, sometimes the bunkers are good to be in out here, though, I will say that” DeChambeau was transcribed by ASAP Sports before the 2021 U.S. Open. “They’re in really great condition, and the rough lies can be treacherous sometimes. It really depends what type of lie you get.
“I really don’t know if bunkers or rough is better, but for sure just getting it as close as I can to the green is going to be a strategy of mine.”
The former SMU Mustang has the power where if he hits somewhat straight, he’ll dominate.
Hit it long and crooked, and he’s at least got the strength to gouge it out of the rough and still contend.
DeChambeau was last in action at the Sentry Tournament of Champions where he took T-25th. His last win was at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March 2021. However, he’s missed just one cut since then and earned solo second at the BMW Championship where it took a heroic effort by Patrick Cantlay to win in a playoff last summer.
