2022 Farmers Insurance Open: Top 10 power rankings at Torrey Pines
Sungjae Im has been one of the top players in the young 2021-22 PGA Tour season.
The South Korean star earned his second career victory by prevailing at the Shriners Children’s Open last fall. Im has finished in the top 11 three times since, including in his last start last week at The American Express (T-11th).
It was a good showing in Palm Springs after a rare missed cut the week prior at the Sony Open. Im soared 20 spots up the leaderboard with a closing 6-under 66. He was under par all four rounds and, in his two rounds on the Stadium Course, was first in strokes gained tee to green (8.663 total) and third in total SG (7.606).
The 23-year-old ranks 10th this season in strokes gained off the tee (.707) and is ninth in SG around the green (.649).
That’s nothing new off the tee as he was 16th in that stat in 2020-21, but the short game improvement is huge from 142nd a season ago and 92nd two seasons ago.
Im comes to southern California seeking his fifth straight made cut at Torrey Pines. At the Farmers Insurance Open, he earned T-52nd (72-68-72-72) in 2019, T-36th (67-73-71-73) in 2020, and T-32nd (69-74-69-73) in 2021. Im also took T-35th (72-72-69-76) at the 2021 U.S. Open.
Im was T-18th in the U.S. Open field in fairways hit (55%) and T-18th in greens in regulation (64%).
I’d wait to save Sungjae Im in one-and-done leagues for a more favorable part of the schedule coming up on the Florida swing, but he’s still a solid DFS or top-10 pick here on the west coast.
