Sam Burns is making his sixth appearance at Torrey Pines and fifth at the Farmers Insurance Open.

He’s made the cut three times at this venue, highlighted by T-18th (66-72-70-75) at the 2021 Farmers. Burns will have to clean it up on the South course to contend. A 72 and a 75 aren’t going to cut it.

Nonetheless, the former LSU Tiger ranked T-10th in the field in greens in regulation (75%) and was 10th in strokes gained off the tee (2.838 total).

“I think the biggest thing is just not to get ahead of yourself out here,” Burns was transcribed by Tee Scripts during the 2021 Farmers Insurance Open. “I think this is a golf course where you have to focus on every single shot, can’t really take a shot off out here.”

Burns went on to have a career year in 2021.

He won in the spring at the Valspar Championship and got his 2021-22 season started off right with a win at the Sanderson Farms Championship.

He added two more top-10s and an unofficial top-10 when he contended at the Hero World Challenge en route to T-3rd to cap his 2021 calendar year.

Burns’ lone start of 2022 was T-19th at the Sentry Tournament of Champions. Kapalua was a new course for Burns, but he should be more comfortable this week at Torrey Pines, even as a southeastern guy more used to putting on Bermuda than poa annua.

Riviera features a poa annua/bent mix. Burns was solo third last year at the Genesis Invitational.

The 25-year-old ranks 26th on the young season in SG off the tee (.478) and eighth in SG approach (.852).
