2022 Farmers Insurance Open: Top 10 power rankings at Torrey Pines
For the first time since 2015, Dustin Johnson didn’t begin his year in Hawaii. Despite plenty of high finishes in 2021, DJ went winless on the PGA Tour and failed to qualify for the Sentry Tournament of Champions. The Sony Open the following week is not a good fit for his playing style, so he skipped it, per usual. The same goes for last week’s The American Express, which he also regularly eschews.
The last time Johnson teed it up competitively was in October at the CJ Cup, where he took T-45th in the limited field event. Prior to that, he had three top-10s in his previous four events and ended 2021 with seven top-10s and just four missed cuts.
If Johnson is going to shake off the rust this week, it might as well be at a familiar venue.
Counting two U.S. Open appearances, this will be the 37-year-old’s 12th appearance at Torrey Pines. While he’s never won, DJ has played the weekend nine times, led by T-3rd (69-69-71-66) in 2011 and three more top-20s.
This is his first time playing the Farmers Insurance Open since 2017. However, Johnson did take T-19th (71-73-68-74) at the 2021 U.S. Open. A disappointing Sunday round kept him from contending down the stretch. Nonetheless, DJ still finished 22nd in strokes gained off the tee at 1.62 and 18th in SG putting (3.73) for the week.
The 37-year-old ranked 21st last season on the PGA Tour in strokes gained off the tee (.361) and 28th in SG putting (.429). He was also second in scoring average (69.619).
