2022 Farmers Insurance Open: Top 10 power rankings at Torrey Pines
The Farmers Insurance Open isn’t a normal stop on Justin Thomas’ schedule. In fact, this is his first appearance since 2015. But, after taking T-19th at Torrey Pines South at last year’s U.S. Open, maybe he’s starting to warm up to the venue.
JT posted 73-69-71-73 and was 14th in the field in strokes gained around the green (2.79 total) and 11th in SG putting (5.04 total).
He also earned T-10th (68-73-72-69) at the 2014 Farmers Insurance Open.
“It’s all right in front of you. Nothing’s hidden,” Thomas was transcribed by ASAP Sports prior to the 2021 U.S. Open describing Torrey Pines South. “You just have to go out and play well and really manage your game.”
Thomas comes in hungry for a win, though he’s still playing well.
The former Alabama Crimson Tide has racked up three straight top-fives and five in his last seven starts. The streak includes solo third at the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba and T-5th at the Hero World Challenge to close 2021 and T-5th at the Sentry Tournament of Champions at year’s beginning.
His last win was the 2021 Players Championship in March.
With plenty of rest post-Hawaii, I see JT getting his west coast swing off to a good start.
The 28-year-old ranked third on the PGA Tour last season in SG approach (.887) and third in SG tee to green (1.418). Not to mention, ninth in birdie average (4.31), sixth in scoring average (69.773), and first in proximity from the fairway (28’10”). His approach stats weren’t great from the rough, so driving it relatively straight to go with his length is key this week.
