2022 Farmers Insurance Open: Top 10 power rankings at Torrey Pines
There must be a love-hate relationship between Xander Schauffele and Torrey Pines.
The hate comes from three missed cuts in a row and four out of five at the Farmers Insurance Open to start his career. The mild-mannered Schauffele likely struggled under the spotlight of playing in his hometown of La Jolla.
He finally got things back on track with a T-25th (69-70-70-70) finish in 2019. A missed cut by just one in 2020 gave way to T-2nd in 2021. Finally, Schauffele contended at a pair of courses he knows like the back of his hand.
Rounds of 70-72-68-69 left him five shots back of eventual champ Patrick Reed, but it was still a confidence boost. The last three rounds were on the South course.
Schauffele returned to Torrey Pines South for the 2021 U.S. Open and carded 69-71-72-71 for T-7th.
Again, he was just five shots off the lead.
Schauffele was eighth in the field in fairways hit (63%), first in strokes gained off the tee (6.11 total), and top-25 in SG approach and SG around the green. Had a few more putts rolled in, we could’ve been talking Schauffele as the champ instead of Jon Rahm.
As we all know, Schauffele earned his glory later that summer by winning Olympic gold.
The former San Diego State Aztec comes into the week off of a 12th place finish a few weeks ago at the Sentry Tournament of Champions.
That was a no-cut event, and this will be Schauffele’s first full-field, 36-hole cut event since the Northern Trust in August.
The 28-year-old ranked 41st in SG off the tee (.266) and 14th in SG approach (.65). He was second in sand saves at 64.71%, which will help him traverse the more than 50 bunkers on the South course.
Plus, Schauffele should be well-versed putting the sometimes unpredictable poa annua greens. He was 16th last season in SG putting (.48).
