World number one Jon Rahm left no doubt that he will once again be a factor this week at Torrey Pines after another scintillating finish on the South’s 18th hole on Wednesday.

Jon Rahm once again produced something special on the South Course at Torrey Pines to begin his 2022 Farmers Insurance Open. Flashback to last summer and the Spaniard hit two remarkable putts on both the 17th and 18th holes at the South Course to claim his first U.S. Open title, his finish on Wednesday was very much reminiscent of that incredible finish.

The U.S. Open champion was part of a star-studded threesome on Wednesday, a group that also included 2020 Masters winner Dustin Johnson and the 2021 PLAYERS champion Justin Thomas. The group did not disappoint as they combined to total 14 under par on the difficult South Course at Torrey Pines during their opening round. The South played almost a stroke over par on Wednesday, that’s almost a four-shot differential from its North counterpart.

“It was probably one of the best
swings I’ll make all year, that 3-wood was absolutely perfect.” – Jon Rahm

Rahm opened his account with a 6 under par 66 after he finished his round on Wednesday with an electric eagle on the Par 5 18th. The magic he produced on the closing hole brought back memories of last summer when he finished with a dramatic curling putt from nearly twenty feet to secure the birdie that won him his first major.

Jon made another big putt on the 18th green on Wednesday, this time from the shorter distance of 12 feet, and it all was thanks to the incredible approach he hit with his second shot from nearly 280 yards out.

The World number one continues to produce magical moments at Torrey Pines, he did it when he won here back in 2017, and then again last summer at the U.S. Open, and once again today to close out his round in style. Rahm is 51 under par at the Farmers since 2017, it’s a place he clearly loves and feels comfortable at, especially when standing on that 18th green.

The Spaniard reflected on that after his opening round when describing his experience on the 18th saying:

"I thought to myself nothing ever happens for me on thisgreen, I’ve never got lucky on this hole, so this is my time. It was probably one of the bestswings I’ll make all year, that 3-wood was absolutely perfect."

Jon has put himself in position for another magical week at Torrey Pines after his opening round as he sits just three shots back of leader Billy Horschel after round one at the Farmers Insurance Open.
