2022 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am: Top 10 power rankings
This just seems like an event Patrick Cantlay ought to have won by now.
The Long Beach native has shown to be plenty comfortable heading north to Pebble Beach.
Counting the 2019 U.S. Open where he took T-21st, Cantlay has made the cut all six times at Pebble with two top-10s and a T-11th.
Last year was his best result. The former UCLA Bruin tied the Pebble Beach record of 62 to take the first-round lead. He struggled at Spyglass Hill with a 1-over 73, which ultimately dropped him too far back to allow a 70-68 on the weekend at Pebble to vault him back into the lead. Cantlay settled for T-3rd three shots back of Daniel Berger.
In the three rounds at Pebble, Cantlay ranked first in the field in strokes gained tee to green (9.678) and first in greens in regulation (80.56%).
“Yeah, I like it here. It was my first top-10 finish as a pro here, I think in 2013, and then came back here and started my, I guess comeback, you would say, here and made the cut, which was an accomplishment for me at the time,” Cantlay was transcribed by ASAP Sports in 2020. “So I really like the golf courses this week and it’s always nice to play in California, so I’m excited to be here.”
At No. 4, Cantlay is the top-ranked player from the Official World Golf Rankings in the field.
He’s just one spot shy of his career-high No. 3 ranking, where he just was until Viktor Hovland took over after last week’s win on the DP World Tour.
Cantlay got to his lofty perch by winning the Memorial Tournament, BMW Championship, and Tour Championship en route to PGA Tour Player of the Year honors.
The 29-year-old is off to a solid start in 2022. He took solo fourth at the Sentry Tournament of Champions and solo ninth at The American Express.
