2022 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am: Top 10 power rankings
Matt Fitzpatrick is back at Pebble Beach for the first time since the 2019 U.S. Open. He played well that year in just his second time on the property, carding rounds of 69-71-72-68. While he finished nine shots back of champion Gary Woodland, he was only six off second place and three off of a tie for third.
The Englishman arrives in the U.S. this week to tee it up for the first time in 2022. Fitzy ended 2021 in style, winning the DP World Tour’s Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucia Masters at historic Valderrama. That was another narrow, tree-lined layout that values a great short game as the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am will.
Fitzpatrick followed it up with T-2nd at the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai. In 2021, he made six top-10s on the PGA Tour and also added T-2nd at the abrdn Scottish Open.
It’s crucial to play from the fairway at Pebble Beach, Monterey Peninsula, and Spyglass Hill. That’s perfect for Fitzpatrick, who is not long but very accurate off the tee.
He ranked 17th on the PGA Tour last season in driving distance (68.37%), which helped him to 15th in strokes gained off the tee (.539).
He was also 38th in SG putting (.367) and second in conversion rate on putts from 15-20 feet (30.43%).
The weather forecast this week doesn’t look too menacing, which might be to Fitzpatrick’s detriment. The Englishman seems to do well in tough conditions and wouldn’t be thrown off by cold and wind.
Regardless, this event seems like a good one for Fitzy to keep on the schedule.
If he’s going to win his first career PGA Tour event, this is a prime opportunity to do so with just one top-10 player in the world to fend off.
