Death, taxes, and Jordan Spieth making the cut at Pebble Beach. Counting one U.S. Open appearance, the Texan has fared just fine on the California coast with nine made cuts in as many tries.

The highlight came in 2017 when Spieth blitzed the field for a four-shot victory.

He fired 68 in round one at Monterey Peninsula, 65 at Spyglass Hill, and 65 and 70 at Pebble Beach.

Spieth put it on cruise control on Sunday, making two birdies and no bogeys to eliminate any threat of anyone catching him.

Even when he was a young phenom, Spieth has shown to have an old soul. He’s a player who appreciates the history of the game and the classic architecture on display at the old Crosby Clam Bake back in the day, all the way to the current version of the Pro-Am.

“What’s not to love as a golfer here?” Spieth asked rhetorically in 2021, as transcribed by ASAP Sports. “So I’ve loved this tournament, obviously finding success at this tournament has been really, really cool, just as a golf lover and someone who enjoys the history and the architecture of golf courses. So I’m happy that it’s been good to me over the years.”

Spieth’s resume also includes T-4th in 2014, T-9th in 2020, and T-3rd last year.

In 2021, he held the 54-hole lead and was on pace for his first win since 2017. That would have to wait until the spring.

Nevertheless, Spieth still went low to post 67 at Spyglass and 65, 71, and 70 at Pebble. In rounds at Pebble, he made no double bogeys or worse, was 10th in strokes gained approach (4.045) and 12th in SG around the green (1.938).

The former Texas Longhorn is hoping to regain the type of form he found at last year’s west coast swing. His streak of 14 made cuts ended at last week’s Farmers Insurance Open.

Torrey Pines is not a great venue for Spieth’s game. Pebble Beach and company are though.

Spieth was sixth on the PGA Tour last season in SG around the green (.407) and 33rd in putting (.389).
