The 2022 Waste Management Phoenix Open, or the newly branded WM Phoenix Open if you prefer, has finally arrived!. The crazy party-like atmosphere that the PGA pros will experience this week is similar to the joy I’m feeling now that we are done with three consecutive weeks of multiple course rotations. We finally get to see one course, TPC Scottsdale (Stadium), for all four rounds and it’s glorious.

The PAR 71 design that plays a little over 7,250 yards is home to one of the most famous and remarkable holes in golf, the cauldron that is the PAR 3 16th hole. The 16th has been transformed into a modern-day coliseum over the years and once again it will be filled to the brim with thousands of fans each day.

It’s a unique atmosphere, to say the least, and it is just one part of an exciting three-hole stretch that also includes the PAR 5 15th, and the ultimate risk-reward PAR 4 17th.  The stretch is sure to produce an exciting Sunday finish once again.

The 132 man field is absolutely stacked for this week’s party at the WM Phoenix Open with six of the World’s current top 10 in attendance. The number one player in the World Jon Rahm is joined by Viktor Hovland (3), Patrick Cantlay (4), Justin Thomas (7), Xander Schauffele (8), and Hideki Matsuyama (10) in Scottsdale, Arizona, on Super Bowl weekend.

Arizona State Sun Devil Jon Rahm is the betting favorite this week at the WM Phoenix Open. The World number one will be looking to win this event for the first time, and he comes in with a fantastic track record having finished no worse than 16th in his last five starts here. He has three top 10 finishes in his last six starts at TPC Scottsdale.

That history, the World ranking, and a 3rd,14th, and 2nd place finish in three starts to begin 2022 are the reasons why Rahm is a very worthy favorite at the top of the market this week.

Jordan Spieth (+2000)

Jordan Spieth came incredibly close to winning at Pebble Beach last week and he was pretty much in control of things on Sunday until faltering on the 17th hole. He didn’t come away with the win but there are still a lot of positives that can be garnered from his performance last week.

It was his best result of 2022 to date and now he gets to come back to a place that ignited his run last year. Spieth had not recorded a top 5 finish in any event since the 2019 PGA Championship when he arrived at the Phoenix Open last year, he proceeded to produce his best finish in nearly two years when he posted a 4th place finish after carding a 17 under par performance.

The finish ignited a run of form throughout the rest of 2021 that included a win, at the Valero Texas Open, and six more top 10 finishes in all. Jordan has recorded three top 10 finishes at the Phoenix Open in his last five appearances here, and he comes into this week after producing one of his best strokes gained approach performances since the U.S. Open last year, he gained over five strokes with his iron play last week at the AT&T Pro-Am.

Even though he didn’t get the win last week Spieth felt like he played well and that his game is trending in the right direction, the stats last week speak to that as he led the field in strokes gained tee to green gaining over seven strokes for the week. If he can take that over into this week he should be in another good position to come away with the win.

Sam Burns (+3000)

Burns was a disappointment a few weeks ago after missing the cut at the Farmers Insurance Open when he was one of the favorites to contend going into the week. He has had a rough start to 2022 and he will be hoping he can turn things around this week at the Waste Management Phoenix Open.

Even with the rocky start to begin the year Sam has turned into a quality player, he had a stretch to close out 2021 that included seven straight top 20 finishes. Three of those finishes came on courses that could be considered comparable to what players will experience this week in Arizona, he finished 14th and 5th at the Shriners and CJ CUP respectively on two desert tracks to begin the 2021-22 PGA season.

Sam was 22nd at the Stadium course last year and he seems to have finally found some comfort around TPC Scottsdale after missing the cut in two previous starts prior to that. The form hasn’t been there so far for Burns so this is more of a bet on his talent and belief that this type of course, suits his game, maybe the week off last will have rejuvenated him heading into this week.

Adam Scott (+5000)

Adam Scott hasn’t been seen stateside since the RSM Classic last year but he has started 2022 with some good results overseas including a 10th at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, and a 9th place finish at the Dubai Desert Classic last week.

The Aussie has started the new year gaining strokes with his approach play in two consecutive events, and he gained strokes in every department last week in Dubai. He was 5th at the CJ CUP in October and he has had success throughout the years at TPC Sawgrass on another course that could be a good comparison for this week.

I’ll take a chance on Scott this week at a decent number and hope that one of the best ball-strikers in the World can continue his early-season form this week in Arizona.

Andrew Putnam (+1000)

Putnam was 7th at the Waste Management Phoenix Open last year and he comes into this week in even better form than he was at this time last year. Andrew has gotten better and better to start 2022 with a 27th, 14th, and 6th place finish in his first three starts.

After finishing 11th at TPC Summerlin in October Putnam is another who has shown a tendency to play well on desert tracks. He has gained strokes in every event so far this year and is certainly playing well enough to find himself in contention once again at a triple-digit price.
