2022 Genesis Invitational: Top 10 power rankings at Riviera CC
Looking at Justin Thomas’ 2021-22 PGA Tour season to date, there’s not a bad result in the bunch. Counting the exhibition Hero World Challenge to close 2021, Thomas is a combined 98-under par in six events and finished in the top 20 each time.
Most recently was a T-8th finish at the WM Phoenix Open. Rounds of 67-70-68-66 kept him under par each day, but he couldn’t gain the extra three shots needed to get into a playoff.
Nonetheless, JT should be feeling some momentum as he seeks his first win since the 2021 Players Championship.
“I’ve got a lot of things that are trending the right way and I’m really starting to feel good about my game,” Thomas was transcribed by ASAP Sports. “I just never got my run this whole week. That’s just going to be the difference.”
Now the 28-year-old arrives at the Genesis Invitational for the eighth time.
Thomas has never missed this event since debuting in 2015. He made his first five cuts with T-9th (69-71-67-70) in 2018 and solo second (66-65-65-75) in 2019.
It was his tournament to win in 2019, but a wind-swept final round allowed J.B. Holmes to swoop in for a one-shot win.
Perhaps that led to a little scar tissue as JT MC’d at Riviera in 2020 and 2021.
Missed cuts are rarities for Thomas, so I’m willing to chalk these up as anomalies at a site that should suit his game well.
Thomas is sixth on the PGA Tour this season in strokes gained approach (.965) and has been top-six in this stat every season since 2016-17. He’s also making nearly six birdies per round to lead the PGA Tour.
