2022 Honda Classic: Top 10 power rankings at PGA National
Sungjae Im has been dialed in for his last eight rounds at the Honda Classic.
How do these scores look to you?
72-66-70-66 allowed him to outlast Mackenzie Hughes and the rest of the field by one in brutal conditions in 2020. Im’s 6-under total tied for the highest winning score since 2007.
The defending champ was back again in 2021, carding 68-68-69-70. It was only one shot higher than the previous year, but a more benign setting left him seven shots off Matt Jones winning pace.
Some players skip the Honda Classic because it’s difficult. There are more prestigious events down the pike, too. Neither of those things are keeping Sungjae away.
“I personally like the challenges on the PGA TOUR, especially for the Florida Swing,” Im was transcribed in 2021 by ASAP Sports. “The greens are firm. There’s a lot of water. I know all the players will be struggling, including myself, but I try to have fun playing through the challenges. I tend to play well overall when the courses are more challenging.”
Im also made the cut in his tournament debut in 2019 with T-51st.
The 23-year-old South Korean star is already a winner on the PGA Tour this season at the Shriners Children’s Open.
Im is up to four top-10s with the last coming against an elite field at the Farmers Insurance Open (T-6th).
He also fared well last week against another strong field at the Genesis Invitational where Im snagged T-33rd.
The stakes are a little lower here, so this is a great opportunity for Im to pick off his third PGA Tour title.
A good short game is crucial at PGA National. Im is second on the PGA Tour this season in SG around the green (.6). He’s also relatively long and straight, which offers another huge advantage. Im is 10th in SG off the tee (.665).
