2022 Honda Classic: Top 10 power rankings at PGA National
Could Tommy Fleetwood be rounding the corner?
It’s hard to be too critical of a man who has made 13 cuts in a row worldwide since May, but no wins since 2019 is also getting to be a bit troubling.
We’ll focus on the positives to mention Fleetwood is coming off a couple high finishes over in the Middle East. He earned T-12th at the DP World Tour’s Dubai Desert Classic and a week later took T-8th on the Asian Tour.
Fleetwood’s had time to relax since then, joining the field at the Honda Classic for his first event on American soil in 2022.
The Englishman couldn’t have picked a better spot.
Fleetwood still seeks his first win in the U.S., but he came close in both appearances at PGA National.
Fleetwood posted 70-68-67-69 for solo fourth in 2018 and just two shots out of a playoff.
He got into contention again in 2020. Rounds of 70-68-67-71 left him two shots adrift yet again, this time alone in third place. A birdie instead of bogey at the par-5 18th could have gotten him into a playoff
When Fleetwood is on his game, he’s an elite ball striker. Those skills serve you well on a windy layout. He ranked fifth in the field in 2020 in strokes gained tee to green (9.029).
“It just makes you play good golf. Hit it well tee-to-green generally,” Fleetwood was quoted by ASAP Sports in 2018. “I think with how windy it is, I found the greens, just once you miss fairways, it’s really hard to control your ball. Just some of the yardages you’re playing out there, downwind, you can be 15 or 20 off.”
