Not only did Matt Jones win the 2021 Honda Classic, but he did it in record fashion.

The Aussie’s five-shot victory tied the tournament’s greatest winning margin. It groups Jones with the likes of Jack Nicklaus in 1977 and Camilo Villegas in 2010.

It was Jones’ second career PGA Tour victory. His first came at the 2014 Shell Houston Open.

“It means the world. Seven years between wins, it’s been a battle. I’ve had ups, I’ve had downs, but to win a second time on this golf course in these conditions that we faced all week is, it’s phenomenal and hopefully it’s something I can build on for the rest of the year,” Jones was transcribed by ASAP Sports. “I mean, I really played amazing golf all four days. I didn’t make any real mistakes, which is what you need to do around here.”

Jones’ opening 9-under 61 tied the course record. He led the field in strokes gained tee to green (14.301) and was top 25 in all SG stats. Jones only found the sand three times and got up-and-down twice.

Keeping big numbers off the card is crucial at this event. He made no double bogeys or higher all week.

Jones wasn’t just a one-hit-wonder at this event. He’s made six of eight cuts at the Honda Classic, including T-4th (66-67-71-73) in his 2008 debut.

The 41-year-old Arizona State alum cooled off for the rest of 2021 but is rounding into form again this year. Yet another 61, this time on Sunday at the Sentry Tournament of Champions, nearly won Jones another event. He also had a Saturday 62 that helped him to solo third place only behind Cameron Smith and Jon Rahm who both had historic weeks.

Jones added a T-15th last week at the Genesis Invitational where he carded four rounds of par or better at Riviera.
