Who ‘won’ the PGA Tour’s West Coast swing in 2022?
By Bill Felber
4. Hideki Matsuyama (-4.14)
Matsuyama made five West Coast stops on the PGA Tour this year, and he won one of them, the Sony (-2.57) in the aforementioned playoff with Henley.
But almost everything Matsuyama did on the Coast was productive, if not dominant. He tied for eighth at the WM Phoenix Open (-1.22), for 13th at the Sentry TOC (-0.29), and for 30th at the Farmers (-0.30). His least productive appearance was this weekend at the Genesis (+0.25) when he was largely a non-factor. He still tied for 39th.
For Matsuyama, it all added up to $1,851,810 in official earnings, elevating him to the No. 1 spot on the tour’s money list.
3. Justin Thomas (-4.49)
Thomas made four appearances during the West Coast swing. He failed to win any of them but was a consistent contender.
From a standpoint of his final placing, Thomas’ best showing came at the high-dollar Sentry TOC (-0.92), where he tied for fifth. Measured by standard deviation, he actually played better at both the Genesis (-1.64) and the WM Phoenix Open (-1.22), although his finishes – sixth and tied for eighth – were slightly worse.
That discrepancy is explained by the birdie-fest nature of the TOC, making his impressive-sounding total of 25-under 267 less statistically extraordinary.
Thomas’ weak showing – which wasn’t very weak – came at the Farmers (-0.70), when he tied for 20th.
For his efforts, Thomas grossed $1,064,558 on the Coast.
