We are just over a week away from the 2022 PLAYERS Championship but first, there is the small matter of the Arnold Palmer Invitational to focus on.

The field at Bay Hill Club and Lodge this week will not quite produce what was on display at the Genesis Invitational two weeks ago. Many will take this week to prepare for the upcoming PLAYERS in what will be the biggest event of 2022 to date. Still, the field making its way to Orlando this week is quite a bit stronger than last year when the Arnold Palmer fell between a World Golf Championship event and the 2021 PLAYERS Championship.

Bryson DeChambeau may no longer be in the field after having to withdraw earlier on Monday as he still deals with an injury that has plagued him for much of the early part of 2022, but that doesn’t mean that this week’s field is lacking for star power.

World number one Jon Rahm is set to make his Arnold Palmer Invitational debut this week, Rory McIlroy returns to Bay Hill after having had led after round one here last year, and both Viktor Hovland (4) and Scottie Scheffler (6) are also in the field this week. In total six of the top twenty players in the Official World Golf Rankings are in the field this week.

Sepp Straka will tee it up again this week after his come-from-behind victory at the Honda Classic last week.  An event that looked all but over heading into Sunday at PGA National provided another exciting conclusion to a PGA Tour event this year. For the longest time, it appeared as though Daniel Berger, who began the day with a five-stroke lead, would continue to assert himself at the top of the leaderboard at the Honda Classic. He had been flawless over the first three rounds and did not look like he would be caught anytime soon.

Berger had a rough start on Sunday though, this included taking a double bogey on the par 5, 3rd hole, and two additional errors on holes 5 and 6 that also led to dropped shots. Irishman Shane Lowry was quick to take advantage of the Berger errors and he too found himself on top for the majority of the final round. Meanwhile, Straka would hang in there, and when his chance came on the 18th hole he took advantage of it. Lowry failed to birdie his final hole and Straka secured what looked like an unlikely outcome when the day began.

Past Winners Of The Arnold Palmer Invitational

  • 2021: Bryson DeChambeau  (-11)
  • 2020: Tyrrell Hatton  (-4)
  • 2019: Francesco Molinari (-12)
  • 2018: Rory McIlroy (-18)
  • 2017: Marc Leishman (-11)
  • 2016: Jason Day (-17)

Tiger Woods has won at Bay Hill Club and Lodge throughout his career an incredible eight times, and seven others have won the Arnold Palmer on multiple occasions. Rory McIlroy can join that group with a win this week after winning for the first time in 2018.

World number one Jon Rahm is the betting favorite this week as he makes his 2022 Florida-Swing debut at the Arnold Palmer Invitational

The world number one has been able to hold onto the top spot in the rankings despite not winning on Tour since last year’s U.S. Open. Rahm started 2022 relatively strong with two top 5’s and two top 15 finishes in his first four starts to begin the year, but he struggled some at the Genesis Invitational in his last start and would go on to finish outside of the top 20 at Riviera.

Still, the 2021 U.S. Open champion is the clear favorite in any field that he is a part of and the books still treat him as such. The competition for the top spot in the world is tight and with Collin Morikawa, Patrick Cantlay, and Vikor Hovland in his rearview mirror, he will want to be amongst the winner circle again here soon.

Adam Scott (+3000)

This seems like a fantastic value on a player of Scott’s caliber and someone who comes into this week in as good of form as anyone in recent months. He did not play in the Arnold Palmer Invitational last year so his last visit to Bay Hill Club and Lodge came in 2020 when he missed the cut. Scott came into that week in pretty good form as well having just won at the Genesis Invitational in the start previous to his last, that last start came at the 2020 WGC Mexico where the Australian finished 26th. That stretch involved a great deal of travel and came right before the PGA Tour called a halt to the 2020 season because of the pandemic.

I like the fact that Scott chose to take a week off prior to the Arnold Palmer this time around after having traveled from the Middle East to Phoenix for the WM Phoenix Open, and then on to California for the Genesis Invitational. He should come into this week well-rested and ready to carry over his early-season form into the ‘Florida Swing’.

Adam has recorded three top 10 finishes in four starts to begin 2022, this includes when he finished 4th in his last start at the Genesis Invitational. He gained strokes in nearly every area at Riviera and garnered nearly two strokes with his irons, the only exception came in the short game department for Scott where he lost strokes around the tricky greens.

The hope is that at a course like Bay Hill that de-emphasizes around the green to a certain extent, Scott will be able to use the rest of his game in his ascent to the top of the leaderboard come Sunday.
