Key Stats At Bay Hill

To win at Bay Hill, players need to either be long or straight and preferably both. Due to the length of the course, players can’t consistently hit their approach from 200+ yards out of the rough and expect to contend. Fairways and greens are the recipes for success here, so much so that three of the key stats this week are highly correlated.

I could’ve added tee-to-green in the last column to get some exposure to the short game. Less than five players hit more than two out of three greens here the last two years, so getting up and down is important. Bogey avoidance is the only stat that the winner from the last five years finished in the top three in for the tournament, so that made the list instead.

Now that we’re on the 20th event of the season, my data for key stats is only going to account for a player’s last 36 rounds. This will help account for the recent form of an individual and allow for more change amongst the top. The following is a list of the top 10 players in the field in these key stats over the past 36 rounds, this also includes Bryson DeChambeau and Tyrrell Hatton’s results for the tournament in the year that they won.

Hatton gained strokes in all six major categories and DeChambeau only lost strokes around the green. Putting, especially on fast Bermuda greens, is crucial this week, but Straka was 141st on Tour in Strokes gained putting heading into the Honda last week. He won after finishing fourth in putting for the week, proving once again how volatile the putting statistic can prove to be.
