Five top-25s in seven Players Championship starts makes for a healthy resume for Hideki Matsuyama.

He’s been atop the FedEx Cup standings for a good chunk of the 2021-22 PGA Tour season thanks to two wins.

We’ll start with his success at TPC Sawgrass. Matsuyama debuted at the Stadium course in 2014 with a T-23rd finish. That kicked off four straight made cuts led by T-7th in 2016 when he posted 68-71-67-73.

The Japanese star accrued another top-10 in 2019 with scores of 71-72-66-67. His strong finish kept Matsuyama just four shots off the lead.

He tied the course record 63 to lead by two after round one in 2020 before the event was canceled.

More tough luck came in 2021 when he bounced back nicely from an opening 76 for a 69 on Friday that left him one behind the cut line.

Jumping to more recent form, Matsuyama earned his seventh career PGA Tour title last fall in his home country at the Zozo Championship. The eighth win came two starts later in January at the Sony Open in Hawaii.

His last outing was T-20th last week at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. It was his eighth straight made cut and seventh straight top-40.

On the season, the 30-year-old ranks 11th on the PGA Tour in strokes gained tee to green (1.252). He’s not crazy long, but can get out there far enough and with control.

Hideki’s 27th on the PGA Tour in total driving (135). He’s one who can take dead aim as well as anybody on approach, especially from the short grass where he checks in at 24th (29’2”) in fairway proximity.
