Fantasy Golf: 2022 Players Championship DFS Picks

This week, the PGA Tour presents the fantasy golf community with the 2022 Players Championship. A stacked field of talent will arrive in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida in an attempt to win one of the sport’s most coveted tournaments. Let’s take a look at the PGA Tour from a fantasy golf perspective!

Before I discuss my fantasy golf player selections I wanted to emphasize that the purpose of this article is not to provide an exact lineup for a specific fantasy provider. Having stated that, this article will provide multiple player options in an effort to assist the reader in generating a unique lineup that will hopefully have the potential to win a GPP (guaranteed prize pool) contest!

Now let’s turn our attention to my fantasy golf player selections for the 2022 Players Championship.

Justin Thomas

Since the beginning of January, Justin Thomas has played four events on the PGA Tour. In those four tournaments just noted, Thomas has accumulated four consecutive top 20 finishes, including a sixth-place finish at the 2022 Genesis Invitational three weeks ago.

In relation to this week’s current listed 2022 Players Championship field, in the last 12 rounds played on the PGA Tour, Justin Thomas ranks ninth in strokes gained tee to green, eighth in strokes gained ball striking, and tenth in bogey avoidance.

Shane Lowry

The 2019 Open champion fired a final round 67 at the 2022 Honda Classic two weeks ago en route to an eventual second-place finish.

Due to the fact that Shane Lowry performed so well at the 2022 Honda Classic, I decided to take a hard look at the player statistics for the event to see how Lowry stacked up relative to the field. After four rounds of competitive play at the 2022 Honda Classic, in relation to the field, Lowry ranked third in GIR (greens in regulation-73.6%) and first in bogey avoidance (4).

In 2021, Lowry arrived at the Players Championship on the heels of several poor results on the PGA Tour, including a missed cut at the 2021 Arnold Palmer Invitational. Lowry went on to finish eighth at the 2021 Players Championship. Well, Mr. Lowry arrives at this year’s 2022 Players Championship in much better form. I absolutely love Lowry this week in all DFS formats.

Martin Laird

In February, Martin Laird posted a final round 67 at the 2022 Waste Management Phoenix Open on his way to a 14th place finish.

Regardless of the DFS site you decide to play this week, Martin Laird should be a low-cost play. Due to that fact, I think Martin Laird presents outstanding fantasy golf value. Let us not forget that Martin Laird has won four times on the PGA Tour, including a win at the 2020 Shriners Children’s Hospitals Open.

Yes, I know that Martin Laird has not had any recent success at TPC Sawgrass. However, he does have multiple top-five finishes at the Players Championship on his career resume, including a second-place result in 2012.

Matt Fitzpatrick

Matt Fitzpatrick arrives at this week’s PGA Tour event on the heels of three consecutive top-ten finishes on the PGA Tour, including a ninth-place result at the 2022 Arnold Palmer Invitational.

As of this writing, the weather forecast for this week in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida is not good. Having stated that, I want golfers in my DFS lineup that can handle difficult weather conditions that force players to be happy with par rather than birdie. Last week, Fitzpatrick clearly illustrated an ability to perform at a high level in difficult conditions.
