The Players Championship: Examining Potential Champions in 2022

The biggest event of 2022 so far, with the biggest prize purse in golf (20 million), has finally arrived!. It is time to return to TPC Sawgrass for the 2022 Players Championship, or PLAYERS (in all caps) if you prefer.

The dream of former PGA commissioner Deane Beman came to fruition for the first time at TPC Sawgrass back in 1982 when Jerry Pate won the inaugural edition on the new Pete Dye-designed stadium course that was created with fans in mind.

The event for the players is the PGA’s flagship event and it has been part of the schedule since back in 1974 when the very first Players Championship was played. The great Jack Nicklaus won the event three times before it took up residence at TPC Sawgrass, including winning the very first PLAYERS in 1974.

In 2021 the Players Championship returned to the schedule for the first time since 2019 after the 2020 edition was wiped out due to the pandemic. TPC Sawgrass permitted 20% of the event’s usual attendance to watch the 40th edition of the PLAYERS last year. The championship will be packed to full capacity for the 41st Players Championship this week.

Justin Thomas came from behind last year to win his first-ever PLAYERS after a final round 68. He will aim to become the first-ever back-to-back winner of the illustrious championship this week. The task at hand with not be an easy one for JT with all ten of the world’s top-ranked players in attendance for the players’ event.
