The Players Championship Preview and Picks

The Favorites
For the first time that he’s teeing it up this year, Jon Rahm (+1100) isn’t the undisputed outright favorite. His price this week is more than fair for the world number one. His last two finishes here are T9 and T12. He was tied for the lead in 2019 with eight to play before attempting a hero (dumb) shot, much to the dismay of his caddy on the par-5 11th.
That was before Jon Rahm was Jon Rahm though and if he sleeps on the 54-hole lead again he’s going to close it out. Justin Thomas (+1300) is in great form currently and he did win here last year, but he was also +2000 then and his price is a little too short now. Plus, nobody has ever won The Players Championship in back-to-back years. In fact, nobody has won this event twice in the past 20 years.
Two prices that really stand out this week are with Dustin Johnson (+2250) and Brooks Koepka (+4000). These two guys are as low as 11/1 and no higher than 16/1 in all four majors this year. The majors will have a very similar strength of field, so the pricing discrepancy is confounding. Neither player is in great form and the oddsmakers are much smarter than the average bettor, but these odds are very appealing.
