The iconic 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass and how the 2021 field fared
By Sean McCann
The famous 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass is widely known as one of the most feared, yet entertaining, holes on tour. Dubbed the nickname ‘The Island Green’, even the World’s Top Golfers can find their round ruined from a single tee shot. The 2021 Players Championship was no different, and while we saw some golfers dominate the hole, we also saw others have their entire week ruined from the 17th.
In order to prepare for the excitement, anguish, and stress that comes with such an illustrious hole, let’s take a closer look at how the 2021 Players Championship field fared:
Balls in the water: 66
Hole-in-ones: 0
Birdies: 80
Pars: 259
Bogeys: 62
Doubles/Other: 57
Scoring Average: 3.23
While birdies seemed hard to come by over the week, a few golfers found surprising success on the Island Green. World No. 34 Adam Scott birdied Hole #17 in 3 out of his 4 rounds, leading him to a T48 finish. Players Championship debutant, and fellow Australian, Cameron Percy, was credited with the longest made putt on the 17th hole, a 55-foot, 4-inch birdie.

Many others will still be having nightmares about their experiences on the 17th at TPC Sawgrass last year.
On the other side, many golfers in the field probably still have nightmares from that hole, or at least the water surrounding it. In the first round, Byeong An carded an 11 after finding the water a miraculous 4 times. Charl Schwartzel, Kevin Na, and Maverick McNealy also saw their rounds come to a disappointing finish, each carding an 8. It is evident that these scores contributed to a shocking average score of 3.23.
In one of the most important tournaments on tour, it only seems fitting to have one of the toughest holes. While many fans watching cannot wait to see the World’s best battle Hole #17 at TPC Sawgrass, I’m sure most in the field wouldn’t mind skipping it and heading straight to the 18th tee.
