It has been a very long week down in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, and hopefully, it will be coming to a conclusion by the end of Monday. The 2022 Players Championship began on Thursday and through various weather delays did not see the completion of round two until Sunday. Now those that remain in the field will march out for what they hope will be one final trip around TPC Sawgrass on Monday.

The completion of the third round is set to take place from 8 am EST and the hope is that the final round will be able to get underway by 1 pm EST.

Anirban Lahiri was the surprise leader at -9 when play was brought to a halt on Sunday night. He currently holds a one-stroke lead through the first eleven holes of his third round. Tom Hoge and Harold Varner III sit one shot back of that mark, and the three of Sebastian Munoz, Paul Casey, and Sam Burns are all two back at seven under par.

Who is Anirban Lahiri? the current leader of the Players Championship

Lahiri is the World’s 322nd ranked player and he has been playing professionally since back in 2007. He will be looking for his first win on the PGA Tour this week but he does have previous winning experience.

The 34-year-old has won seven times across the globe with five wins on the Asian Tour, and two wins on the Asian/DP World Tour. His most recent victory came back in 2015 at the Maybank Malaysian Open. Lahiri has come close to winning on the PGA Tour before with multiple top 5 finishes including a 2nd place finish at the Memorial back in 2017. He also recorded a top 5 finish at the PGA Championship back in 2015, so he is no stranger to competing on the big stage.

” I mean, obviously it definitely would be a career highlight. That goes without saying. This is the next thing to winning a major I would say,” was Lahiri’s response when asked about the significance of winning an event like the Players Championship.

dark. Next. Big names miss cut in Sawgrass carnage

There is a bunch of golf still to be played and there are some big names just behind Lahiri on the leaderboard going into Monday including, Paul Casey, Daniel Berger, Shane Lowry, Sergio Garcia, and Patrick Reed. It may seem improbable that Anirban would be able to hold onto the lead with so many big players still in the hunt, but players have come out of seemingly nowhere to win at TPC Sawgrass before.

I would call it a remarkable winner for a pretty extraordinary week.
