It was surprising to see popular winner’s pick, Collin Morikawa, miss the cut at last week’s Players Championship. He was on the wrong side of the tee sheet, weather-wise, and still only missed by a couple shots.

It was the first time Morikawa MC’d since August, so I’m going to chalk it up to a tough week on a tough golf course in tough conditions.

Prior, Morikawa was coming off T-2nd at the Genesis Invitational where he fought back to factor in the tournament late despite several records being set by Joaquin Niemann.

Morikawa has six top-10s and a top-20 in his last eight starts.

A big reason for his recent success is improved putting, which has been well-documented throughout the season. He lost -.457 strokes per round on the greens last season, good for 178th on the PGA Tour. Now, Morikawa’s eighth (.745) even after a negative week with the flat stick at TPC Sawgrass.

This will be the 25-year-old’s Valspar Championship debut. Look for him to use the extra rest and preparation to study up on Innisbrook. He’ll be more prepared than the battered and bruised players coming south from the Players Championship, which finished late Monday.

The Cal alum is second on the PGA Tour in total strokes gained (2.037) and continues to be one of the purest ball strikers in the game.

He’s also second in par-4 scoring (3.87), first in fewest holes per eagle (54), and first in final-round scoring average (33.39), among other superlatives.
