2022 Valspar Championship: Top 10 power rankings at Innisbrook
Shane Lowry’s only teed it up five times in 2022, but he’s gone for quality over quantity.
Most notably, he looked to have the Honda Classic in his clutches. Leading down the stretch, a random outburst of rain appeared to get him off-kilter and allowed Sepp Straka to swoop in for the victory.
Lowry settled for solo second.
His hole-in-one on the par-3 17th in round three last week at the Players Championship was the hole’s first ace since 2019.
It helped vault the Irishman up the leaderboard where he would contend through much of the tournament on the way to T-13th (73-70-67-72).
Despite barely finding more than half his fairways, Lowry hit 73.61% of greens in regulation and gained nearly half a stroke per round putting.
The 34-year-old began 2022 with three top-25s between the DP World Tour and Asian Tour.
He only has 14 measured rounds in the 2021-22 PGA Tour season, barely qualifying for statistical ranks. Lowry is 14th in total strokes gained (1.339) thanks mostly to his oft-reliable putter.
The big guy is 13th in SG putting (.647) and rarely makes big mistakes on the green, sitting in sixth in 3-putt avoidance (1.39%).
Lowry’s making his second Valspar Championship appearance. He posted 71-70-73-72 to earn T-49th in 2018.
Lowry’s only win in the U.S. came seven years ago at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational. A win here in Florida wouldn’t be on the same level, but beating half of the top 10 ranked players in the world would still be a nice resume booster with Augusta National looming less than a month away.
