It is hard to believe that 2020 Masters champion Dustin Johnson’s last win on U.S. soil came at Augusta National almost a year and a half ago. 2021 was somewhat of a down year for Dustin Johnson in comparison to the incredibly high bar he has set for himself throughout his career.

Johnson played 20 events in 2021 and recorded six top 10 finishes and a single win, the win however came at the Saudi International at the beginning of the year. His best finish in the United States last year came at the BMW Championship last August where he finished tied for 6th place.

2021 marked the first time in over a decade that the World number 10 did not record a single top-five finish in the United States. It had been a similar story for DJ in 2022 so far when up until last week at the Players Championship things had been relatively quiet to begin the new year for Dustin.

The 9th place finish at TPC Sawgrass last week came in just Dustin’s fourth start of the year, he had previously recorded a top 10 at the Saudi International on the DP World Tour but had missed the cut and finished 25th at Torrey Pines in two previous starts in the United States.

Dustin Johnson came to life in his final round last week however as he tied the course record at TPC Sawgrass with a final round 63. The 2020 Masters winner carried that momentum into the first round at the 2022 Valspar Championship this week as he opened with a four-under-par, 67.

All of this is encouraging for Dustin Johnson with the 2022 Masters on the near horizon. Is it possible that Dustin’s next win on U.S. soil comes at the site of his last?. That is yet to be determined, but he certainly has the experience and know-how around Augusta as April 7th quickly approaches.

He was asked about what he has learned from all of his experiences at Augusta and responded with, “just being comfortable on the holes, where to hit it I think is probably the biggest thing. It’s more about the misses there. Where can you miss it and still have a chance to make a par or just to be able to get up-and-down because there’s a lot of holes and a lot of flags where even if you hit a great shot and it goes just a little bit too far or if you come up a hair short or something, you don’t have any chance to get up-and-down.”

This experience and the state his game is currently in can only be seen as positives as he heads back to the Masters in search of a first win in the USA since 2021.
